You’ll need some honey- local if possible, fresh lemons, and rum.  These three ingredients will make the perfect Hot Toddy.  It will soothe your throat, ease your cough, and give you that warm relaxing feeling we all need when we are suffering from chest congestion and a nasty cough.

My eighty-four year old mom got this recipe from her grandmother who was born in County Cork, Ireland back in 1880.  She tells me the secret of a Hot Toddy is that the ingredients have to be heated to a slow boil, on the stove in a saucepan, not in one of those newfangled microwave ovens that came out in the latter part of the last century.  Bringing honey and lemon to a boil changes its chemistry and instead of being a food it turns it into homeopathic medicine.  The rum gives it a nice kick and will help the little ones sleep through the night.

Squeeze the juice from 2 lemons and put into the saucepan.  Make sure you use fresh lemons, not that stuff they stick inside a plastic lemon.  Remember, we’re trying to cure people and nothing beats fresh.  Add ¼ cup of local honey to the saucepan and bring to a slow boil.  If the youngins are hollering or your man is whining try giving them a shot of rum while the mixture comes to a boil.  That should either take their breath away or shut them up for a while.

Set the boiled honey and lemon aside and let cool for a few minutes.  Add a generous shot of rum.  Foard usually bumps my arm while I pour and it always comes out just right.

Let everything cool until it’s just warm.  You can take the mixture a tablespoon at a time as needed, or you can mix it with a hot cup of tea.  Either way it’s a tasty home remedy for chest congestion.

Well until next month stay sassy and keep a stout heart.

Well it’s cold and flu season again.  The youngins will be out of school and Lord help me if Foard County comes down with the croop.  Don’t tell him I told you but he gets real whinny when he gets to feelin poorly.  A simple home remedy for chest congestion is a Hot Toddy.  A good Hot Toddy will not only relieve that nasty cough, it will relax you and allow you to get the rest you’ll need to get better and start feelin yourself again.

Shall I introduce you to the ladies of Coyote Creek! They come from all walks of life – teachers, business owners, nurses, accountants, house-moms, etc.  The one thing that we all have in common is our love for this fantasy sport and its departure from the trials and tribulations of everyday life.

We dress up wearing styles ranging from the fashions of Ms Kitty of Gunsmoke  to the

rough duds of Calamity Jane.  Dressing in the old Victorian clothing and then strapping two six guns around your hips adds to the make-believe fantasy of playing yesteryear and riding the trails of the Old West.   As Sassy Schoolmarm said to her husband, “Guns and leather are a great fashion accessory. Don't buy me anymore jewelry. I want guns and leather for presents!"

And have I mentioned that although we have our “lady” categories in which we can choose to compete, some of our finest actually outshoot our cowboys on a regular basis.  Diamond Lilly can march into the final standing shooting at the top with the big dogs at practically every match.  In fact, we have a number of lady shooters who have on occasions outshot their male companions which makes for an interesting ride home from the range.

Cowboy action shooting is a great introductory shooting sport.  Everything we do on the range is guided by our “Safety First” philosophy.  For those ladies who have children, it is a wonderful family sport.  We have whole families who come out and enjoy this sport together while competing in various categories.  You can tell when a family is taken by cowboy action shooting when their summer vacations include a trip to End of Trail which is the world championship of cowboy action shooting held in New Mexico each year.
