Pistols. Any auto loading pistol manufactured prior to 1912. This included any variations of that pistol and or its clones, so long as they conform to the original appearance of that firearm. Changes in caliber from the original is acceptable. (An example would be a Mauser C96 broomhandle, which was chambered originally for the 7.63 Mauser cartridge. Models which were later chambered for 9mm Parabellum and .45 ACP would be acceptable).
Rifles. Any pistol caliber rifle manufactured from 1884 to 1898 and or its clone is acceptable. Rifles manufactured prior to that time period would not be acceptable. Rifles must have exposed hammers. Auto loading pistols with attachable shoulder stocks may also be used.
Shotguns. Any Winchester 1897 pump shotgun or its clone that is SASS legal is acceptable. SASS dictates that the only gauges acceptable for the ’97 is either 16 or 12 gauge.

 NEW SHOOTERS TO WILD BUNCH:
Due to changes enacted in August 2007 (see below) and the higher level of safety required, any shooter who has not participated in shooting a Wild Bunch category in a match must take and pass a practical orientation class with either the Range Master or a New Shooter Instructor. Further, any shooter who is deemed to not be safe and or sufficiently proficient in the use of Wild Bunch firearms must take and pass a practical orientation class for shooting Wild Bunch prior to shooting that category again. Any range officer (this includes loading table officers) who experiences a shooter who demonstrates unsafe and/or poor handling of Wild Bunch firearms, will immediately stop the shooter from continuing the stage. The shooter has the option to finish the match using standard main match SASS firearms, and will be placed in the appropriate category. A practical orientation will include the shooter demonstrating the proper safe and proficient use of the firearms to be used in the Wild Bunch category.

End of Trail, 2008

By Rattlesnake Blake

Howdy pards, this here is ole Rattlesnake a’scribblin to ya.  We just got home from EOT, and it was a fun match to shoot.  I recommend that you try to go at least once to experience it.  The targets were up close and big.  There were a lot of pistol knockdown targets that were the standard size.  Those targets were fun to shoot, and they put an extra factor in the match.

Soiled Dove won the coveted “White Buffalo” for shooting a clean match.  Yours truly, had one miss, and therefore had to listen to Dusty Lonestar enlighten every posse that shot on the stage we were RO’ing during the main match.  There were lots of vendors there, and hopefully Foard County News and Sassy Schoolmarm got everything they were looking for along with purchases they had not even thought of.

Kentucky Tom and Dusty Lonestar both were awarded Regulator Badges, and we had a great time celebrating the event.  We were rewarded that evening, back at the trailers, when Tom came out in shorts and tank top sporting his new Regulator badge (and shining it).  He even had a second (or was that a third) beer that evening.  I lost count after my ??? glasses of wine.

Every evening a group of us who were RO’ing got together at the camp site and relaxed revisiting the day’s events.  Even though he didn’t RO (He did get to shoot with the RO’s.), we allowed Foard County to join our festivities.  We were also surprised to see Southern Outlaw along with his family at the match.  We had just seen him at Mule Camp and didn’t know that he was coming to EOT.  Southern Outlaw shot the match, and made a good accounting of himself.

Even though it is a sizable expense, if you have a camper, I would highly recommend that you camp on the grounds.  The experience of getting together in the evening, after all of the shooting is done for the day, is an experience that you will surely remember for a long time to come.  I did forget to say that Kentucky Tom won a buckle for the Team Match, and Soiled Dove received a buckle for her class in the Main Match.  Congratulations to all of our pards from Louisiana who came home with a buckle and/or a “White Buffalo”.

I missed being with you all at the June match, but I am looking forward to getting together with everyone in July.  EOT was great, but getting back to where everything is green and where you can drink the air is wonderful.  We will miss our pards at EOT, but we sure will be glad to back with our Bayou Bounty Hunter pards in July.  May the Good Lord take a’shinin to ya, an remember to keep yore powder dry.

Text Box: WILD BUNCH CHANGES as of August, 2007

HANDGUNS: Two handguns may be used in this category if desired. A shooter may also opt to continue with the former practice of using one handgun and perform a reload. Automatic pistols may be loaded with a round in the chamber with the safety on (must have a functioning safety), and holstered or staged as directed. If the pistol is to be staged out of the holster, the pistol must be brought to the line in a holster, and then properly staged. The use of a double action revolver designed and manufactured prior to 1922 is allowed. Revolvers may be reloaded with the use of half-moon clips. Handguns may be used in the gunfighter style ( ala “Last Man Standing” ).

RIFLES: Rifles must still be post 1883 manufacture, however, they may be of design/manufacture up to 1922. Rifles must still be of pistol caliber. The use of automatic pistols with a shoulder stock are still allowed. An automatic pistol used in such a manner as a rifle may be loaded with a round in the chamber and the safety on ( must have a functioning safety ). Maintaining absolute muzzle control is mandatory and will be strictly adhered to. Further, semi-automatic versions of submachine guns of that era are allowed as long as they comply with the guidelines governing main match rifles.

SHOTGUNS: The 1897 Winchester shotgun and its clones is still allowed, and the 1887 Winchester shotgun and its clones will also be allowed. Both shotguns may be stoked to capacity or to the number of rounds called for in the stage whichever is lesser. Shotguns will still be staged empty with the action open unless specifically otherwise called for.

LONG RANGE RIFLE: Military style rifles pre-1922 will be allowed in a Wild Bunch Category for long range rifle. Optics manufactured prior to 1922 or their clones will be allowed. Lead bullets are required, but may utilize gas checks. It is highly recommended to load ammunition for these rifles at the bottom of the recommended loading guidelines for their respective cartridges. Any round over the berm is an automatic match DQ.

RULES: All previous rules governing the Wild Bunch Category are still in effect unless amended by this change. All ammunition will be of pistol caliber ( with the exception of long range rifle ) and composed of lead. No jacketed ammunition is allowed. Automatic pistols may be loaded with a round in the chamber with the safety on (must have a functioning safety), and holstered or staged as directed. If the pistol is to be staged out of the holster, the pistol must be brought to the line in a holster, and then properly staged. An automatic pistol with a shoulder stock used as a rifle may be loaded with a round in the chamber and the safety on (must have a functioning safety ). Maintaining absolute muzzle control is mandatory and will be strictly adhered to. Shotguns will still be staged empty with the action open unless specifically otherwise called for.
Since firearms will be allowed to be loaded with a round in the chamber with the safety on, it is of utmost importance that strict safety be adhered to at the loading table and the firing line. Both the shooter and the loading table officer must verify that the firearm has the safety engaged once the firearm is loaded.

This year’s annual match in November will include the Louisiana state championship black powder shootout. (the match will include both black powder and smokeless categories.)

If you would like to help out with the planning and putting on the annual match, please contact one of the board members. There are many tasks at hand.

There are a number of committees that need your help to put on such an event, and we would really appreciate any help you might be willing to lend.

Text Box: CLUB NOTICES

Arrangements have been made to have the canopies in place at the five stages being shot. If you get down to the range early, please lend a hand in getting these set up over the loading tables of the five stages being used.

An RO I class has been scheduled for the fourth Saturday of July. 7/26/08. It will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the clubhouse. The RO I material can be downloaded from the SASS website to preview prior to the class, however, this is not necessary as we will have copies. The cost is $10 and pins are presented at the completion of the class. PLEASE EMAIL/CALL RATTLESNAKE TO LET HIM KNOW IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND. (This is also a good opportunity for anyone who has taken the class to audit it as a refresher at no charge.)

Timers: We are missing several club timers. If you have run a posse lately and perhaps left a timer in your gun cart, please return it to the clubhouse. We need all ten timers to run the annual matches.

Members who have shooting privileges at the range, please use the following paint when repainting targets: Rustoleum, Sail Blue and Sunrise Red. It takes less paint to touch up the targets. There is usually some paint in the hotel; but if you need to purchase some, please use the following colors.

FOR THE SUMMER ONTHS, WE WILL CLOSE REGISTRATION AT THE CLUB HOUSE AT 8:45. SHOOTING WILL BEGIN ON THE RANGE AT 9:00 A.M. TO AVOID THE SUMMER HEAT. SUMMER COWBOY ATTIRE IS ACCEPTABLE.

Early Posse:  The Early Posse  is now in progress and will continue for the months of June, July, August and September.  Your early posse leader is Louisiana Cuz.  Requirements for the early shoot require at least TEN shooters to notify Louisiana Cuz prior to the shoot and to register on match day.  (It is imperative that we have at least 10 shooters to safely and efficiently run the posse.)

If you would like to avoid the heat of the summer and plan to shoot in the early posse, please contact Louisiana Cuz by the Wednesday prior to match day.  His contact information is:  Cary Williams, (985) 386-9718, lacuz57@netscape.net

Registration is from 7:00 – 7:15 a.m. under the Cantina on the range.  Shooting begins at 7:30 a.m.
