Text Box: SASS Scholarship Fund
By Rattlesnake Blake

Howdy Pards, this here is ole Rattlesnake a’scribblin to ya. Ordinarily, I talk about our last match and things relating to our club. This will be a different letter to ya. Not too long ago, SASS asked Soiled Dove and me to work on the SASS scholarship committee. Up to now, I was a supporter of the fund, but was not very familiar with it. Yes, one of our own, Waco Reb (son of Razorback Latigo), was a Bayou Bounty Hunter recipient of the fund for his four years of college. However, I was not totally aware of the process. Nor was I aware of the quality of the applicants.

We are currently in the process of reviewing the latest applicants for SASS scholarships, and I am totally blown away by these young folks. Believe me, there is hope in this generation! These kids’ applications and their views on life are wonderful and enlightening to review. Most are academically in the 3.5 to 4.0 GPA range. Those who are not at that level academically excel so much in other areas. A common thread amongst most of them is their religious commitment. Many are involved with campus religious activities, and many attend a religious school and/or are going to attend one for their post secondary educational plans. The fact that they are shooters and have such a commitment to God is amazing. All of them must submit an essay explaining why the 2nd Amendment is important to them. (For those who have already received a scholarship, an essay on the importance of SASS and firearms responsibility is required.) I must tell you that after reading their essays, I am convinced that there are young adults out there who are worth turning this country over to.

It is my belief that we need to do whatever we can to support this fund. We, at one time, had a mechanism to support the scholarship fund; but with rule changes, we do not anymore. I know that we are hosting a charity match for Fisher House, and it is one of the best recipients as a charity that I know of. The SASS Scholarship Fund is another.

I would like to see us come up with a mechanism to support this worthy cause as well. It is heartbreaking to know that not all of these kids that we are reviewing will get the scholarship. There just is not enough money in the fund to give it to all of them. We must make an investment into the future leaders of this country who believe in the principles we believe in. They are out there, and they are standing up for those ideals with their peers as well as their teachers and professors. And yes, we have received letters of support from many of their teachers and professors who know that these young folks are shooters and believers of our country which was founded upon the belief of the God given rights spelled out in our Constitution and its adjoining Bill of Rights.

I am so impressed with these applicants that Soiled Dove and I are going to make a direct contribution to the scholarship fund, and we encourage those of you to do the same. It is a small investment into the future of our great country. We wring our hands with what we see in the leaders of our country in this day and time. Well, we have a chance to make a difference in the future of this land we so love. These “kids” are that investment, and they are certainly worthy of our support.

I thank you for taking the time to read my ramblings. I believe in my heart of hearts that this is very important to the future of our sport, as well as to that of our country. May the Good Lord take a’shinin to ya, an remember to keep yore powder dry

Cowboys For Cops Cpl. JR Searcy Memorial Match. May 22, 2010,
Presented by The Jackson Hole Regulators

On March 4, 2010 Cpl JR Searcy was responding to a call, after the end of his shift, to help a fellow officer. Cpl Searcy was fatally wounded by a shot fired from the suspect. JR left behind a wife and 3 young children. JR was truly one of the “good guys”. The showing of support from the community as well as the entire state has been amazing.

100% of the proceeds from the match and the donations will go to the Searcy family. There have already been many items donated for the raffle event and everyone is encourage to contribute.

Please go to the Jackson Hole website for location and further information
or Cowboys For Cops pdf flyer.
